My Favorite Acrylic Paints for Bible Journaling

Happy weekend my friends!

This week I wanted to share my favorite acrylic paints with you!

Acrylic paints are one of my favorite things to use in my bible. When used a certain way they dry almost instantly and are an easy way to add color and excitement to your page.

Martha Stewart

The paints I use the most are by Martha Stewart. I love the satin ones. They come in a large variety of colors and I love the smooth sheen they leave on the page!

These paints also come in high gloss, metallic, glitter, pearl, chalkboard, and a home decor versions. An acrylic watercolor paint was just released that I’m curious to try. (I’ll keep you updated on that one.) You can find them on amazon, but Michael’s has the biggest variety and lowest price that I’ve found, starting at $2.29 for a 2oz bottle.

I also have a gold metallic that is great for adding a little sparkle! I love to lay a base color of the satin and then put a thin coat of the gold over the top of it. This technique gives it just the right amount of sparkle when you move the page in the light. (See below)

Handmade Modern

If you keep up with our Instagram stories, Leah shared a couple weeks back about some paints from Target that she was trying out. So of course I had to try them too! The brand is called Handmade Modern. I got a satin in Lavender and a shimmer in Egg. These come in 2oz jars and start at $1.99.

These paints are just as awesome as the Martha Stewart ones! And they’re cheaper for the same amount. They are an open mouth jar so they are perfect if you want to paint with a brush! The shimmer is very similar to the Martha Stewart metallic, but a little less glittery looking.

Master’s Touch

I also have a small collection of these Master’s Touch brand paints that I got at Hobby Lobby. They have a pretty good array of colors. However, I probably won’t buy more of this brand in the future. These ones are a lot thicker than the others and cover words more than I would like. I’ve also found that they don’t seem to all have the same consistency. There is one in particular that is really gloopy and doesn’t go on to the page smoothly. I’m not a fan of that. I’m not sure if it’s that particular color, that specific tube or what, but I don’t want to waste my money on another bad tube of paint!

Here is a swatch of each type of paint.

Bonus

A little bonus tip for you! If you squirt a small amount of paint onto an old gift card and swipe it across the page you will get a super thin layer of paint that will dry almost instantly! I have had these same bottles of Martha Stewart paint for the past 3 years that I have been bible journaling and most of them are only half empty! I would definitely say that it’s because I use so little paint when I use this technique. So if you’re looking for a fast and easy way to get paint on your page and stretch the life of your paint, give it a try!

I hope this little review (and my bonus tips!) help you out. Satin type paints are definitely my favorite! There are other brands that have satin versions, but I haven’t personally tried them. Let me know if you have suggestions!
